un'artista da scoprire: Bob Dylan

E' da diverso tempo che vorrei avvicinarmi a questo cantautore ma non saprei da che parte iniziare... cosa mi consigliate?

Alfred Bello had a partner and he had a rap for the corps
Him and Arthur Dexter Bradley were just out prowling around
He said "I saw two men running out they looked like middleweights
They jumped into a white car with out-of-state plates"
And Miss Patty Valentine just nodded her head
Cop said "Wait a minute boys this one's not dead"
So they took him to the infirmary
And though this man could hardly see
They told him that he could identify the guilty men.

Four in the morning and they haul Rubin in
Take him to the hospital and they bring him upstairs
The wounded man looks up through his one dying eye
Says "Wha'd you bring him in here for ? He ain't the guy !"
Yes here comes the story of the Hurricane

Rubin's in South America fighting for his name
While Arthur Dexter Bradley's still in the robbery game

"You think you'd like to play ball with the law ?"
"Think it might-a been that fighter you saw running that night ?"

Arthur Dexter Bradley said "I'm really not sure"
Cops said "A boy like you could use a break
We got you for the motel job and we're talking to your friend Bello
Now you don't wanta have to go back to jail be a nice fellow
You'll be doing society a favor
That sonofabitch is brave and getting braver
We want to put his ass in stir
We want to pin this triple murder on him

Rubin could take a man out with just one punch
But he never did like to talk about it all that much
It's my work he'd say and I do it for pay
And when it's over I'd just as soon go on my way
Up to some paradise
Where the trout streams flow and the air is nice
And ride a horse along a trail
But then they took him to the jailhouse
Where they try to turn a man into a mouse.

All of Rubin's cards were marked in advance
The trial was a pig-circus he never had a chance
The judge made Rubin's witnesses drunkards from the slums
To the white folks who watched he was a revolutionary bum
And to the black folks he was just a crazy nigger
No one doubted that he pulled the trigger
And though they could not produce the gun
The DA said he was the one who did the deed
And the all-white jury agreed.

Rubin Carter was falsely tried
The crime was murder 'one' guess who testified
Bello and Bradley and they both baldly lied
And the newspapers they all went along for the ride
How can the life of such a man
Be in the palm of some fool's hand ?
To see him obviously framed
Couldn't help but make me feel ashamed to live in a land
Where justice is a game.

Bè in una discografia con alcune pietre miliari della storia della musica....

Intanto trovo ottimo il suggerimento di Oh Mercy (è il suo disco più audiophile)- pochi lo sanno ma fu prodotto da Mark Knopfler, suo grande amico

E poi alcuni che non si possono non considerare

Nashville Skyline (c'è una canzone duetto con Johnny Cash che da sola vale il CD)
Io adoro anche la colonna sonora di Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid (molto ben registrata) anche se è un disco meno importante

Bob Dylan è stato il mio viatico verso la musica.
Quando avevo 14 anni mi regalarono Highway 61 Revisited e nulla fu più come prima.(dal punto di vista musicale...)
Avvicinarsi a Bob Dylan, significa esplorare almeno 50 anni di storia della musica, e quindi direi che per poter apprezzare e capire la complessità e la grandezza del personaggio, si dovrebbero anche conoscerne le varie fasi, i cambiamenti, l'evoluzione e l'approccio sia della sua vita che della sua musica.
Fino al 1965 è un cantautore folk, politicamente impegnato, e i suoi lavori risentono di questo tipo di aproccio.
Gli album rappresentativi di questo periodo sono Freewheelin',The Times They Are a-Changin' e Another side.
Qui ci sono pezzi come blowin in the wind e The Times They Are a-Changin'.La strumentazione è ridotta all'osso (chitarra e armonica) e gli arrangiamenti sono essenziali.
Poi nel 1965 c'è la rottura con il folk che culminerà con le contestazioni al festival di newport.
Inizia la svolta elettrica e nascono quelli che per me sono i suoi capolavori assoluti.Subterranean Homesick Blues,Highway 61 e Blonde on Blonde.Questi tre album sono considerati come un trittico, e molti critici sono concordi nel definirli come uno dei punti più alti di tutta la produzione musicale rock di sempre.
Poi nel 1966 ci fu il famoso incidente in motocicletta, a causa del quale Dylan spari' dalle scene per più di un anno.
Quando riappare prima pubblica John Wesley Harding e poi il suo ultimo grande disco:Nashville Skyline.Di questo periodo resteranno famose le registrazioni con la band di robertson, che usciranno poi come the basement tapes.
Qui mi fermo, e non perchè non ci sia altro, ma perchè penso sia essenziale conoscere Dylan per quello che fatto fino alla fine degli anni 60.
Anche perchè chi non lo conoscesse, ed arrivasse fino a questo punto,tutto il resto come si dice, verrebbe da sè........

Modern Times è un grande disco.
A me piace anche Tempest.....
Oh mercy e Under the red skyes molto controversi ma penso con il tempo saranno rivalutati.
Il periodo veramente "buio" sono stati gli anni 80.
Pero' l'ho talmente amato che anche le cose piu' criticabili riescono sempre alla fine a piacermi.....

Concordo..Modern Times mi piace molto..appena sentito mi chiedevo se fosse veramente lui a cantare,proprio la stessa impressione avuta quando ascoltai Nashville Skyline,altro imprescindibile capolavoro

Io sono rimasto colpito da Tempest... La voce è moolto cambiata nel corso degli anni ovviamente però non è male.

Al contrario, secondo la mia opinione, non è più in grado di rendere dal vivo. Visto a novembre del 2011 e ho fatto fatica in alcuni casi a capire quale canzone stesse cantando.
In studio ha ancora un suo perchè!

Ciao King .... io trovo che Bringing It All Back Home sia uno dei più belli di Dylan e credo che con questo album ebbe il mondo ai suoi piedi... Io ho una ristampa del 2005
